Creative Writing in Dementia Care Settings
Three writers- Rebecca Jenkins, Romi Jones and Fiona Evans- are currently taking part in a New Writing North led project which explores the uses of creative writing in dementia care settings. The project is a partnership with Changing Age at Newcastle University and is funded by Newcastle Science City’s Public Engagement programme.
The aims of the project are:
- To encourage the self-expression of people who have dementia and of carers
- For writers to meet and communicate regularly with scientists with expertise in dementia
- For the writers to use the experience of working with patients, carers and scientists and write an original piece of work
- For the creative outcomes of the projects to be shown within the dementia care settings and alongside the play Geordie Sinatra
Sessions are taking place in various dementia care settings across Newcastle upon Tyne and the learning from the project will contribute to a large piece of Medical Research Council research into aging that Newcastle University is carrying out.
